The One Minute Manager - Kenneth Blanchard & Spencer Johnson

The E-Myth Revisited - Michael E Gerber

This book is subtitled "Why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it" which sums it up quite nicely. Gerber says that most businesses are started by technicians, do-ers, who are having an entrepreneurial seizure. They make the fatal assumption that if they are good at what the business does, then that business will succeed. For example if they are a good hairdresser, their hairdressing business will be a success.

What mostly happens with start-ups is that Technicians take the work they love and turn it into a job. Instead of ending up with an exciting, successful business, they end up with a job that has become a chore, with long hours, no security and no steady income. This book shows you how to take control of the business, and to set it up so that it can run without you. Interestingly enough at this stage many people find that they start to love the business again!

Once a Customer, Always a Customer - Chris Daffy

This is a great book that looks at providing outstanding customer service, and keeping a customer for life. It is easy to read and full of examples and ideas.

NLP at Work - Sue Knight

Seven Habits of Highly Effective People - Stephen R Covey

Get Everything Done and Still Have Time to Play - Mark Forster

This book takes time management beyond managing the diary. It is full of tips and ideas to help you focus your attention and overcome resistance to tasks.

I particularly like his way of dealing with "Free Flowing Items". It didn't think it would work until I tried it!

The Richer Way - Julian Richer

Julian Richer is the founder of the hi-fi retailer Richer Sounds, which has recorded the highest sales per square foot of any retailer in the world.

He starts the book by telling us that most employers are still in the Stone Age when it comes to managing the most important part of their business - the people. Julian believes that the key to success is always how you treat your people. If your staff are motivated and productive they will provide high levels of customer care.

This book shows how he has put this theory into practice at Richer Sounds, with amazing results. It also includes some questionnaires which can easily be adapted to suit your business.

Getting Business to Come to You - Paul and Sarah Edwards

The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey - Kenneth Blanchard

This easy to read book from the One Minute Manager stable deals with the issue of delegation. It demonstrates how managers can effectively rid themselves of "monkeys" - other people's responsibilities that get dumped on them. This leaves them free to do what they really need to do.

Understand Your Accounts - A St John Price

It is vital that business owners are financially literate - and by that I don't mean that you can use Sage - I mean that you have to understand financial information.

If your accounts are a mystery to you, and you don't understand budgets, let alone a cash flow forecast, this is the book for you.

It strips away the mystery from figures and shows you how to use them as a key tool in running your business.
